First Steps in Credit Union Management

What is it about?
This course will provide participants with an introduction to the basic skills and knowledge essential in credit union management. Topics are presented in the form of "tasters" with opportunities for progression to more comprehensive courses.
It will be of particular benefit for first time managers (including those who have any input into running a credit union) and for more experienced people who wish to take the opportunity to review their approach to their work.
What will I get out of it?
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- put credit union operation into an historical and social context
- understand the relevance and application of regulation in relation to management requirements
- understand the issues relating to the effective management of staff
- list and evaluate the key elements of effective training
- demonstrate presentation skills
- identify the essential elements of a marketing strategy
- critically assess and review your credit union’s business plan
- show an understanding of accounts, financial planning and budgeting
- draw up an outline for a funding strategy
- identify your own future training needs
Course overview
This is an intensive two day course covering a wide range of topics. It does not deal with any topic in detail. It is non-accredited and provides pointers to progression to other non-accredited and accredited courses, most of which are available through NACUW and/or the Open College Network.
The learning style will be tutor-led, with a large component of interactive discussion sessions and participative exercises. Participants will have the opportunity to draw from their own experience in credit unions.
Participants will receive a course workbook and handouts for later reference, and information about other training opportunities.
