About the event

"I want to see credit unions grow to meet the needs of their members and communities they serve. The LRO is key to that and I am pleased that it has now passed through Parliament. I look forward to hearing how credit unions will use these new powers when they come into force in January (2012)."
Mark Hoban MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, November 2011.

The long awaited Legislative Reform Order (LRO) came into force on 8th January this year. The changes to the Credit Unions Act 1979 will allow credit unions to further develop their services and increase their membership.

The LRO will for example:

  • enable credit unions to accept new types of members, such as partnerships and limited companies;

  • allow interest to be offered on deposits; and

  • amend the common-bond and membership requirements to allow for expansion, consolidation and mergers.

Participants at this event will be encouraged to share their ideas and thoughts on how their credit union are taking advantage of the opportunities that the LRO has provided them with. A number of specific reforms will be assessed in facilitated groups.

This will be achieved by considering:

  • what they have developed so far ... ?

  • what plans do they have for the future ... ?

  • what are the implications for members?

  • what are the implications for staff and resources?

Benefits of attending

  • Receive an overview of the experiences and challenges from credit unions that have already made changes.

  • Take part in an interactive discussion and share the progress of your own ideas and progress so far.
